Why Is My Gaming PC So Loud?

In our computer repair business we love looking after gaming computers.  Maybe it is because we are gamers too.  Gaming computers push hardware harder and faster than typical office-use systems.  High CPU and GPU (video card) use generates significantly more heat than a basic office setup.  Because of this, gaming systems require stronger cooling setups, larger heat sinks, better airflow, and more powerful cooling fans.

Generally speaking, the higher the performance, the greater the cooling requirements.

So first off, a certain level of fan noise is completely normal in gaming computers.  Particularily in gaming laptops with dedicated GPUs.  However, if your gaming PC is louder than usual, there might be some issues that need fixing.

Loud fan noise

Cooling fans are designed to remove heat from the computer while it is working.  The more things your computer is doing,  the harder the CPU and GPU are working, the faster and louder the fans spin up.

There are three common sources of loud fan noise in gaming computers.

Power Supply Fan Noise

The first possible source is the power supply.

If your power supply fan is unusually loud, there is a good chance it may be overheating. Check inside the case and around the back of the computer.  The power supply is the "box" that the power cable plugs into on a desktop computer.

Is it covered with dust or pet hair?  Debris can restrict airflow, forcing the cooling fan inside the power supply to work harder.

The safest way to clean a power supply is to disconnect the cables connecting it to the motherboard and carefully bloiwing it out with compressed air.

GPU Fan Noise

A second common source of loud fan noise is the graphics card (GPU).

A dirty video card heat sink or fan can cause temperatures to rise.  This also forces the cooling system to work harder and become louder.  Dust buildup can dramatically reduce cooling efficiency.

If the GPU fan is clean but still excessively loud, the graphics card may require new thermal paste, or the cooling fan itself could be failing and need replacement.

CPU Cooling Fan Noise

A third major source of noise is the CPU cooling fan.

If the sound appears to be coming from the processor area, open the case and inspect the CPU cooler and heat sink.

  • Is the heat sink covered with dust?
  • Is the fan clogged with debris?
  • Does the heat sink feel loose or move side to side?

If the cooling system is dirty, carefully cleaning the fan and heat sink can often improve temperatures and reduce fan noise significantly.

If you are comfortable working inside the computer, this may also be a good opportunity to replace the thermal paste on the CPU.  Fresh thermal paste can improve heat transfer and help the system run cooler and quieter.
