PS5 and PS4 Keeps Shutting Off? Common Causes and Repair Options in Regina

Sony PlayStations, both PS5s and PS4s, are among the most common gaming consoles we see in our repair shop. When a console suddenly shuts down in the middle of a game, it can quickly ruin a gamer's day. Fortunately, in many cases the problem can be repaired.

Gaming consoles are essentially specialized computers, so troubleshooting a shutdown issue is very similar to troubleshooting a desktop or laptop computer. The first question to ask is: When does the shutdown occur?

  • Does it happen immediately after turning the console on?
  • Does it happen after gaming for several minutes?
  • Does it happen after 30 minutes or more?
  • Is the fan running louder than normal?
  • Does the console feel unusually hot?

Most unexpected shutdowns are caused by heat, or excessive heat building up inside the system. Below are the four most common causes we encounter in our gaming console repair business.

1. Dust and Debris Blocking Airflow

The most common cause of unexpected shutdowns is dust and debris accumulating inside the console.

PS5s and PS4s require significant cooling to operate properly. Air is drawn through the console to cool internal components, including the CPU and graphics processor. The cooling system uses an aluminum heat sink and cooling fan to remove heat from these components.

Over time, dust can build up:

  • Inside air vents
  • On cooling fans
  • On the heat sink fins
  • Around internal components

When airflow becomes restricted, the console's ability to remove heat is reduced. As temperatures rise, the system may automatically shut itself down to prevent damage.

It is also important to ensure the console has adequate airflow around the outside of the case. Placing a console inside a tight cabinet or against a wall can also contribute to overheating.

Professional cleaning can help prevent overheating issues before they become more serious and expensive repairs.

2. Dust Blocking the Power Supply Ventilation

Another common issue is dust accumulation around the power supply.

Like the CPU and graphics processor, the power supply generates heat and requires proper airflow to function correctly. If the power supply cooling passages become clogged with dust, temperatures can increase until the power supply shuts itself down.

This type of shutdown often has a few common symptoms:

  • The console works normally for a period of time
  • Shutdowns typically occur while gaming
  • The console may not restart immediately
  • The system may need several minutes to cool down before powering on again

In many cases, a thorough internal cleaning of the power supply area can resolve the problem.

3. A Failing Power Supply

Not every power-related issue is caused by dust. Like all electronic components, power supplies can fail over time.

Common failures include:

  • Failed capacitors
  • Damaged power regulation components
  • Internal electrical shorts
  • Age-related component wear

When a power supply begins to fail, it may struggle to provide stable power to the console. This can result in random shutdowns, failure to power on, or intermittent operation.

If testing confirms the power supply is faulty, replacement is usually the most effective solution.

4. Liquid Metal or Thermal Paste Problems

Another, though less common, cause of overheating is a problem with the material that transfers heat from the processor to the heat sink.

Older consoles such as the PS4 and many Xbox models use traditional thermal paste. Over time, thermal paste can dry out, reducing its ability to transfer heat efficiently.

The PS5 uses liquid metal instead of conventional thermal paste. Liquid metal provides excellent thermal performance but requires specialized handling and experience.

In some cases, the liquid metal can become displaced or migrate away from the area where it is needed. When this happens, heat transfer efficiency decreases and temperatures can rise dramatically, leading to overheating and shutdowns.

Correcting a liquid metal issue requires careful disassembly and inspection. Depending on the condition of the liquid metal, it may need to be redistributed or replaced entirely.

Our technicians have several years of experience working with liquid metal cooling systems and can safely inspect, repair, and replace liquid metal when required.
