How Much Does Virus Removal Cost?

If your computer is suddenly covered in scary popups, your browser is taking you to strange websites, or you think you have a virus, one of the first questions you probably have is: How much does virus removal cost?

At RescueTECH in Regina, our virus and malware cleanup service is a flat rate of $115 plus tax as of 2026.

That doesn't mean we simply run an antivirus program, click "scan," and hand you a bill.  Proper malware removal can involve looking at the computer from several different angles to find out what is actually causing the problem.

For comparison, virus cleanup prices at brick-and-mortar computer repair shops in Regina can range from roughly $100 to $320, depending on the shop and exactly what is included in the service.

Why Isn't Running an Antivirus Program Enough?

A computer can have something going on that isn't necessarily detected as a traditional "virus." Modern malware can include browser hijackers, unwanted programs, scareware, adware and other software designed to manipulate what your computer does.  Sometimes the visible problem isn't actually the root of the problem.

You might delete a suspicious program and the virus popups disappear.  Then, an hour later, another program appears and the popups return.  At that point, simply running another virus scan isn't necessarily going to solve the underlying problem.

A Recent Example: The "Speed Up My PC" Problem

We had a customer in the shop recently who was dealing with constant popups and couldn't get rid of them.  He had already tried scanning his computer for viruses multiple times, but the problem kept coming back.

When we investigated the computer, we found that the culprit was a supposedly legitimate program that he had downloaded to "speed up" his computer.

Instead of making his computer better, the program would install other malicious programs in the background.  You could remove the popup and the program associated with it, and another would appear.    The problem wasn't simply the individual programs that were appearing.  The problem was the original program was bringing its friends along with it.

This is a good example of why proper virus and malware removal isn't always as simple as running an antivirus scan.

You have to figure out why the problem keeps coming back.

How Do Computers Get Viruses and Malware?

Fake Invoices and Malicious Emails

Fake invoices and malicious emails are a common way for people to get into trouble.  The email may look legitimate and contain an attachment or link that appears to be something the customer needs to open.   Once the person interacts with it, malicious software is installed.

Malicious Website Popups

Another common problem is simply browsing the internet.  A website may display a popup telling you that your computer is infected, call Microsoft support now!!  Or that you have a serious security problem, or that you need to call a phone number immediately.  These messages can look extremely convincing.  They may even make loud noises or display messages designed to frighten you into taking action.

Browser Hijackers

Browser hijackers can cause your web browser to behave strangely, redirecting you to websites you didn't intend to visit.  You may find that your normal search results are being redirected, your homepage has changed, or you're constantly being sent to questionable websites.  Again, simply closing the browser or running a basic antivirus scan may not necessarily solve the underlying problem.

Free Programs That Aren't Really Free

We've also seen plenty of problems caused by supposedly free software.  There are programs advertised as computer speed-up utilities, free VPNs, PDF readers and other useful applications that can have unwanted or malicious software bundled with them.

That doesn't mean every free program is dangerous.  It does mean you need to be careful about what you install and where you download it from.
