• Standard Windows laptops: on many Windows laptops without a backlit keyboard, the keyboard is a separate part that can be removed and replaced on its own. These are usually at the lower end of the price range.
• Gaming laptops and MacBooks: on most gaming laptops and MacBooks, the keyboard is riveted or glued into the top section of the laptop's frame. It cannot be removed on its own, so the whole top piece is replaced, which puts these repairs at the higher end of the range.

It Is Usually the Housing, Not the Hinge

Laptop hinges themselves are made of steel, and they rarely break. What gives way is the plastic housing the hinge is mounted into. Over time, the mounting points crack or pull loose, and the hinge starts lifting the case apart every time you open the lid. In most cases, the repair means replacing that housing so the hinge is held securely again.

It is worth fixing a lifting hinge early. The longer it goes, the more the case is pried apart, and the more stress is put on the screen and the display cable that runs through the hinge area.

Can you replace just one key?

Sometimes. If the key and the clip underneath are undamaged, a single key can be reattached. In most cases, though, the mechanism under the key is damaged too, and a full keyboard replacement is the only repair that will last.

I spilled something on my keyboard. What should I do?

Can I keep using a laptop with a lifting hinge?

You can, but it usually gets worse. Each time the lid opens, the hinge pries the case further apart and puts more strain on the screen and display cable. Repairing it early keeps the repair simpler.
