One of the most common concerns we hear at RescueTECH is: “If I bring my computer in for repair, will I lose my files?”

This worry is understandable.  A computer is not just the device,  it is also your photos, documents, work files, and personal memories.  After 15 years of repairing computers we’ve learned that for most customers, the data is even more valuable than the hardware itself.

Where the Fear of Data Loss Comes From

Many customers come to us worried about data loss because things they’ve had happen elsewhere or stories they’ve heard from friends.

A major source of concern comes from big box repair chains or warranty centres.  Some of these places ship devices away for repair to central facilities.  In many of these environments the standard procedure may involve wiping the drive as part of the repair process.

Even when the issue has nothing to do with the drives hardware, such as a virus cleanup, some customers have experienced data loss after service.

This creates a fear that “repair equals data loss" even when not actually necessary.

How We Handle Repairs Without Losing Your Files

At RescueTECH data protection is built into our repair process from the very beginning.

In most cases such as virus removals, hardware repairs, or system performance improvements there is no reason to delete or wipe a customer’s data.  We approach repairs with the goal of preserving everything intact unless absolutely necessary.

When we work on your computer:

• We do not access customer files unless it is required for technical diagnosis and only with permission
• We do not browse or “snoop” through personal data
• We focus strictly on fixing the technical issue at hand

We take privacy and trust seriously.  Our role is to repair the device, not explore personal files.

When Data Backup Becomes Necessary

In situations where a hard drive is failing or suspected to be damaged we take extra precautions.  In the past we have seen computer "die on the bench" while we are in the middle of testing. 

If we detect signs of drive failure we will often back up the customer’s data as a protective measure. This is done because in some cases this may be the last time the drive is readable before it fails completely. 

However, we always contact the customer first before performing any backup or data-related action.  Nothing is done without communication and approval.

If a customer does not want data copied or backed up we will respect their decision completely.

Trust and Responsibility Matter

When a customer hands us their computer, they are also trusting us with their personal and professional life stored inside it.  We take that responsibility very seriously.

At RescueTECH we would never knowingly do anything that would destroy a customer’s data full stop.

Important Advice for Customers

Even though we take every precaution to protect data during repairs, we always recommend one simple rule:

Always keep a backup of your important files.

This applies whether your computer is being repaired, fans are being cleaned, upgraded, or even just used daily at home or in a coffee shop.  Comptuer can fail unexpectedly and accidents can happen anywhere.

A backup ensures that your important files are safe no matter what happens to the device.
