Where To Take Old Laptops in Regina (And Why It's Worth More Than You Think)

If you've got an old laptop sitting in a closet somewhere, you're not alone. Almost every household and business in Regina has at least one gathering dust, and most people have no idea what to actually do with it. Toss it? Sell it? Donate it? Let it keep sitting there "just in case"?

At RescueTECH, we deal with this question every single day. We refurbish, resell, and repair computers and laptops, and we work closely with Community Computers Regina Inc., a registered Canadian charity, to get working laptops into the hands of people who need them. So we've seen pretty much every version of this situation, from individuals cleaning out a closet to businesses trying to figure out what to do with a hundred laptops at once.

Here's what we've learned, and what we think you should actually do with that old machine.

The Closet Is the Worst Place for It

Here's something most people don't realize: laptops don't get more valuable the longer you hold onto them. They go the opposite direction. Every month it sits in a closet "just in case," it loses value. The processor gets more outdated, the battery degrades, and by the time you finally decide to deal with it, you've left money and usefulness on the table that could have gone to you, or to someone else who really needed it.

We hear it all the time: "I was going to give it to my grandkid" or "I might need it as a backup." Realistically? Grandma isn't going to want it later, and neither will you. Once you've upgraded to a new system, the best thing you can do is get the old one moving, not let it languish.

What Actually Happens When You Bring Us a Laptop

When a laptop comes through our doors, whether it's a personal donation or a drop-off from a business, here's the real process:

We assess its condition and test hardware, including things like the battery.
If it's in reasonable shape for reuse, we run a forensic wipe using a program called DBAN, which overwrites the drive to fully destroy the data.
We replace whatever parts need replacing and reinstall the operating system
The laptop then goes into our donation program through Community Computers Regina, or in some cases we resell it on the charity's behalf, with proceeds going directly to their work.

If you're donating for a tax receipt, it's worth understanding how that value is calculated. The receipt reflects the laptop's fair market value right now, not what you originally paid for it. That value is essentially what two informed people, a willing buyer and willing seller, would agree on. We sell laptops for a living, so we know what they're actually worth in this market. Just because you see a similar model listed online for $2,000 doesn't mean anyone in Regina is going to pay that for it, or that you'd actually be able to sell it for that price. We try to keep people's expectations realistic.

This Is a Big Opportunity for Businesses

While we're happy to help individuals, businesses and organizations are where we'd really love to see more activity, and honestly, where the biggest missed opportunity is right now.

Businesses tend to buy laptops in batches, the same make and model, often from the same OEM. That consistency makes them easy for us to process and easy for the charity to distribute. But here's what actually happens more often than you'd think: we hear about organizations telling IT staff to just dump dozens, sometimes a hundred, perfectly usable laptops straight into the trash because dealing with them properly feels like "too much of a bother."

Think about what that actually costs. In most cases, that organization already has to wipe or destroy the drives on those laptops for security reasons. That takes staff time. Then, after all that effort, the laptops go in the garbage anyway. Meanwhile, there are families right here in Regina who can't afford to buy their kids a laptop for school. One of those units could make a real difference in a family's day-to-day life.

So instead of binning them, here's what we offer:

The IT Guy Can Get the Receipt, Too

Here's a detail a lot of businesses don't know: if a business tells an employee, often the IT person, "it's all yours, do what you want with it," that laptop batch effectively becomes that employee's property to donate. In that case, we can issue the charitable tax receipt directly to them, not the business.

Combined federal and provincial tax credits in Saskatchewan work out to roughly 44% back on the fair market value of the donation. That's a meaningful amount of money for doing something you'd otherwise be doing anyway, clearing out old equipment responsibly.

What About SARCAN or Selling It Yourself?

There are other options out there, and it's worth knowing where they fit.

SARCAN here in Regina runs a recycling program where laptops get bundled up, shipped east, and shredded. It's a legitimate way to dispose of a laptop, and the device does get "dealt with." However it's not the most environmentally friendly outcome, since a working machine gets destroyed instead of reused, and you won't get anything back for it, value-wise.

You could also try selling it yourself on something like Facebook Marketplace. There's nothing wrong with that route, but it means dealing directly with the public, arranging meetups, answering messages, and negotiating. For a lot of people, that hassle isn't worth it for one laptop.
