Why We Don't Buy Used Computers From the Public
There are three main reasons we decided not to buy used computers from individuals.
We Don't Want to Buy Stolen Computers
Before we had a hard policy against buying computers from the general public, we regularly received inquiries from the Regina Police Service and people whose computers had been stolen.
It happened often enough that we eventually decided the simplest solution was to give a hard no to asks about buying computers from the public. We don't want to buy a computer from somebody, put it into our inventory and then have the police show up later because it turns out to be stolen.

The second reason is much more practical.
When someone is getting rid of an old computer, there is often a reason. Maybe it overheats, is extremely slow, has a dead battery or has a motherboard problem. The problem is that some issues aren't obvious when you first turn the machine on.
True story - we once had a laptop come in for laptop repair. We diagnosed it and discovered an expensive motherboard problem.
The interesting part was that the laptop still worked. The problem didn't become apparent until after the machine was running for 15 or 20 minutes. The following week, we saw that same laptop being advertised on Facebook Marketplace as a good working laptop.
The seller knew there was an expensive problem with it. Unfortunately some people will sometimes try to sell a computer they know has a problem rather than deal with the cost of repairing it.
The Seller Usually Wants More Than a Business Can Pay
There is another problem when people try to sell used computers to businesses: expectations about price.
Someone may have paid $1,000 or $1,500 for a laptop when it was new they think it should be worth a significant amount of money on resale. Unfortunately this is not how the used computer business works.
A business buying used computers needs enough room between what it pays and what it can eventually sell the computer for to cover testing, repairs, cleaning, setup, advertising, overhead, warranty claims and the possibility that something goes wrong.
A business isn't going to pay close to the price you see similar computers advertised online. Buying something from a stranger comes with considerably more risk than buying from an established supplier.

If the donated computer qualifies and has sufficient fair-market value, the charity may be able to provide a charitable tax receipt. The value of the receipt is based on the fair-market value of the donated item, not what the computer originally cost when new.
Depending on your circumstances, the combined federal and provincial tax benefit can be around 44% of the eligible donation value.
When donated computers arrive at our office, they are inspected and wiped to ensure the previous owner's data does not remain on the machine. Suitable systems are then refurbished and made available to the community.
Recycle It
If your computer is simply too old or isn't suitable for reuse, recycling is the responsible option. In Saskatchewan, you can take eligible electronics to SARCAN. Not every old computer needs to be saved. Some machines are simply too old to be useful, and there is no point passing an obsolete computer from one person to another.
