SSD Upgrades
Why an SSD Makes Such a Big Difference
Many older computers still run on a traditional hard drive, with spinning platters inside. Swapping that drive for a solid state drive is one of the biggest speed improvements you can make to an older system. Customers are often surprised by how much faster their computer starts up, opens programs and finds files after the upgrade.
If your computer takes minutes to start, or sits with a spinning wheel while programs open, an old hard drive is very often the bottleneck.
Your SSD Upgrade, Your Choice
Every SSD upgrade is a little different, so we give you options for how the new drive is set up:
- Drive only: we install the new drive, and you set it up yourself.
- Drive with a fresh operating system: we install the drive along with a clean copy of Windows or macOS.
- Drive with operating system and your data: we install a fresh operating system and copy your files over to the new drive.
- Drive cloning: in many cases, we can clone your old drive onto the new one.
Cloning: Like Your Old Computer, Only Faster
Cloning copies everything from your old drive to your new SSD, including your settings, stored passwords and installed programs. When you get your computer back, it works exactly the way it did before, just much faster. For many customers, this is the easiest way to upgrade, since there is nothing to reinstall and nothing to set up again.
Whether a drive can be cloned depends on the condition of the old drive and the computer. We will check and let you know which options are available for your system.
RAM Upgrades
RAM is your computer's working memory. If you keep many browser tabs open, switch between several programs, or work with large files, adding more RAM is a great way to bring new life to a laptop or desktop. It helps your computer handle multitasking without slowing to a crawl.
We check how much memory your computer currently has, how much it can support, and what type it uses, then recommend the upgrade that makes sense for how you use it.
Can My Computer Be Upgraded?
Windows Laptops and Desktops
Many Windows laptops and most desktops can still be upgraded, with a removable drive and memory slots. Some thinner Windows laptops have memory built into the motherboard, which limits what can be upgraded. We will check your exact model before recommending anything.
MacBooks
Most newer MacBooks have their memory and storage built directly into the board, so they cannot be upgraded after purchase. Some older MacBook models can still be upgraded. If you are not sure about yours, call or text us with the model and we will tell you what is possible. For more on why this matters, read why we would never buy a MacBook with integrated storage.
Is an Upgrade Worth It?
For an older computer that is otherwise in good shape, an SSD or RAM upgrade is often the most cost-effective way to make it feel new again, for a fraction of the price of a new computer. If your computer is too old to benefit, or has other problems as well, we will tell you honestly. You can also read our guide on whether it is better to repair or replace a computer.
Your Data Is Safe With Us
When we copy or clone your data, we move entire folders and drives without looking through your files. We only access your personal data if you ask us to or give permission beforehand. We still recommend keeping your own backup of anything important, as a general good habit.

SSD and RAM Upgrade FAQs
How much faster will an SSD make my computer?
If your computer currently has a traditional spinning hard drive, the difference is usually dramatic, especially when starting up and opening programs. If it already has an SSD, a RAM upgrade may be the better choice.
Will I lose my programs and settings?
Not if we clone your drive. Cloning keeps your settings, stored passwords and programs exactly as they were. If cloning is not possible, we can install a fresh operating system and copy your files over.
How long does an upgrade take?
Because parts are ordered for your specific computer, timing depends on when they arrive. We will give you the expected timeline when we quote the job.
Can you upgrade my MacBook?
It depends on the model. Most newer MacBooks cannot be upgraded, since their memory and storage are built into the board. Some older models can. Call or text us with your model and we will let you know.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours.
What other repairs do you do?
We also do laptop screen replacement, laptop battery replacement, charging port, keyboard and hinge repairs, and more. See our Laptop Repair Regina page for details.
